STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An 87-year-old woman was fatally stabbed late Thursday night in her Staten Island home, and police have detained a person of interest as the investigation continues.

Officers from the NYPD’s 122nd Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at 33A Carmel Court around 11:31 p.m. Upon arrival, police discovered Laxmiben Khristi, 87, with a stab wound to her chest.

Emergency medical services transported Khristi to Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, where she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released details about the individual taken into custody, nor have they disclosed any possible motive. The NYPD has stated that the investigation is active and ongoing.

Neighbors in the residential community expressed shock over the incident. “This is a quiet area, and we’re all shaken by what happened,” said one resident who declined to be identified.

The NYPD is urging anyone with information about the case to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

A Staten Island grandmother’s tragic death has left a community in mourning as police work to determine what led to the fatal stabbing.
