GAITHERSBURG, Md. — A 37-year-old woman was arrested Sunday after allegedly drowning her 3-month-old daughter in a bathtub, according to Montgomery County police.

Mackenzie Rose Colgan, of Gaithersburg, contacted authorities at approximately 12:12 p.m., reporting that she had drowned her child while bathing her, police said in a statement.

Officers and fire rescue personnel responded to the 7300 block of Summit Avenue, where the infant was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, the baby was pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division quickly identified Colgan as the suspect and arrested her at the scene. She was charged with first-degree murder, police said.

The infant’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy was scheduled for Monday to confirm the cause and manner of death.

Colgan remains in custody, as authorities continue their investigation into the incident.
