DUNKIRK, Md. — A fatal crash involving a GMC Yukon claimed the life of a 43-year-old Washington, D.C. man Monday afternoon, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the crash at approximately 2:23 p.m. in the area of MD Route 4 and Cedarwood Lane. Preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle, driven by Andrew Francis Evans II, was traveling southbound on MD Route 4 near Lyons Creek Road when it veered off the road, striking a speed limit sign.

Witnesses reported the vehicle swerved erratically between lanes at a high rate of speed before crossing the grassy center median near Ashwood Drive. It then entered the northbound lanes of Route 4 and ultimately crashed into a tree off the roadway near Cedarwood Lane.

Evans was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe excessive speed and a possible medical event contributed to the crash.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation and reviewing evidence from the scene.
