Two arrested after 5-year-old girl accidentally shot in D.C. apartment

Quick Arrest Made in Northwest D.C. Robbery Attempt WASHINGTON, DC - Following a Northwest robbery attempt, D.C. Metro Police Department’s Third District detectives have swiftly apprehended a suspect. The incident occurred today around 2:53 PM, in the 1200 block of W Street, Northwest. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Lenare Leath, Jr. of Northwest D.C., allegedly brandished a knife and pushed the victim to the ground in an attempt to steal their property. After a struggle, the suspect fled empty-handed but was quickly caught by responding officers. The victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Police have arrested a man and a woman in connection with the accidental shooting of a 5-year-old girl in a Southwest D.C. apartment on Monday evening.

Officers responded to the Unit block of Galveston Street SW at approximately 6:29 p.m. on December 16 for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the young girl suffering from a gunshot wound inside the apartment. Officers provided lifesaving aid before DC Fire and EMS transported her to a hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Investigators determined that the child was accidentally shot by a younger child who had access to an unsecured firearm in the home. Police arrested 59-year-old Darrell Graham, who was in the apartment at the time, and charged him with first-degree cruelty to children.

Additionally, 21-year-old D’Jaunae McCrory Jackson was arrested after assaulting responding officers and was initially charged with assault on a police officer. Following further investigation and a search of the apartment, McCrory faced additional charges, including first-degree cruelty to children, criminally negligent storage of a firearm, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Police recovered the firearm, determined to be an unregistered ghost gun, along with ammunition and a large-capacity magazine.
