UTICA, N.Y. – A Rome man faces multiple charges after Utica authorities discovered fentanyl in his possession following a car crash at the intersection of Grandview and Watkins Avenues on December 17.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a vehicle that had collided with a tree and an unconscious man inside. Utica Fire Department personnel extricated the driver, identified as Michael Townsend, 50, who regained consciousness but became combative as he was transported to Wynn Hospital for treatment.
While en route, Townsend lost consciousness again. Medical staff at the hospital administered multiple doses of Narcan, successfully reviving him. During the recovery process, hospital staff observed Townsend attempting to conceal several corner-tied baggies of a blue-and-white substance in his mouth.
Police said the substance, which included fentanyl, was secured and presumptively tested. Townsend now faces charges of driving while impaired by drugs, tampering with physical evidence, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities continue to stress the dangers of fentanyl, a substance increasingly involved in overdose incidents across the country.
