Delaware State Police investigate crash after motorcyclist flees traffic stop

LEWES, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash that critically injured a 19-year-old motorcyclist who fled a traffic stop in Lewes on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around 5:32 p.m. on January 13 when a Suzuki GSXR 750 was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway near Old Landing Road. The rider passed an unmarked Delaware State Police vehicle and weaved between cars by riding along lane markings.

A trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist fled at high speed, running a red light at Coastal Highway and Melson Road. The motorcycle collided with the passenger side of a Ford F-150 crossing the intersection.

The motorcyclist, a Bear, Delaware resident, was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 69-year-old driver of the Ford F-150 from Milton, Delaware, was uninjured.
