Newark issues Code Blue alert as temperatures drop to 21°F

NEWARK, NJ — The City of Newark has activated a Code Blue alert from 8 p.m. Monday, January 13, through 9 a.m. Friday, January 17, in response to dangerously low temperatures expected to reach 21°F.

A Code Blue is declared when temperatures fall to 32°F or lower, or when wind chill factors drop to 0°, posing serious health risks. City officials are urging residents, especially seniors and individuals with chronic health conditions, to take precautions against cold-related illnesses.

Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors who may be isolated during this period. The city also reminds property owners of the legal requirement to maintain indoor heat between October 1 and May 1:

  • 68°F between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
  • 65°F between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Anyone without heat or hot water can report issues to the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471.
