State police investigate smash-and-grab theft from vehicle in Hempfield Township

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a smash-and-grab theft that occurred on January 7, 2025, in the parking lot of LA Fitness in Hempfield Township.

The victim reported that the passenger-side window of her BMW was shattered, and a backpack containing personal belongings and credit cards was stolen. The incident took place sometime between 9:20 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., according to authorities.

Shortly after the theft, the suspect used the victim’s stolen credit cards at a nearby Walmart, racking up more than $3,000 in unauthorized purchases. State police said the suspect fled the Walmart parking lot in a black pickup truck within minutes of the transactions.

The investigation remains ongoing as troopers work to identify the individual involved. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Pennsylvania State Police.

The incident highlights a growing concern over thefts targeting vehicles in public parking lots.
