STERLING, VA — Thanaphorn Waltrip had a life-changing moment when she scratched her 20X the Money ticket from the Virginia Lottery and discovered she had won $1 million.
Waltrip purchased the lucky ticket at Wegmans on Columbia Place in Sterling. She chose the one-time cash option of $625,000 before taxes instead of receiving the full $1 million prize over 30 years. The retailer that sold the winning ticket will receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.
This win marks the fifth top prize claimed in the 20X the Money game, leaving one top prize still unclaimed. The $10 scratch-off game offers prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million, with the chances of winning the top prize at 1 in 1,958,400.
Waltrip, who plans to use her winnings to pay bills and support her family, lives in Loudoun County, which received more than $23.6 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last year. Statewide, the Lottery contributed over $934 million to education in Fiscal Year 2024.
