Armed Suspect, Court Bailiff Exchange Gunfire Inside Baltimore Courthouse

BALTIMORE — Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday morning inside the Baltimore City Eastside District Court after an armed man and a courthouse bailiff exchanged gunfire.

According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID), the incident happened around 8:40 a.m. when a man entered the courthouse and, while standing near the entrance, pulled a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at his own head.

A District Court of Maryland bailiff, assigned to courthouse security, responded by drawing his firearm and pointing it at the man.

During the confrontation, both the man and the bailiff fired their weapons. The man was struck and later transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.

Under Maryland law, bailiffs are classified as special police officers employed by the state. The IID, which is responsible for investigating police-involved shootings, stated that government-owned surveillance footage captured the incident and is expected to be released within 20 business days.

The names of both the wounded individual and the bailiff will be made public within two business days, unless an extension is deemed necessary under IID protocol.
