Mon Shot and Killed Outside Newport Exxon Station Planned Fight

NEWPORT, Del. — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday night in the parking lot of an Exxon gas station in Newport.

Officers from the Newport Police Department and Delaware State Police responded to reports of a shooting at 20 N. James Street at approximately 9:10 p.m. on Feb. 5. Upon arrival, they found a 23-year-old man from New Castle suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. Authorities are withholding his identity until his family is notified.

A preliminary investigation revealed that two groups had arranged to meet at the gas station for a fight. During the altercation, an unidentified suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at the victim. The suspect then fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.

The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Authorities have not yet identified any suspects or made any arrests.
