Migrant with ICE detainer held without bail on aggravated assault, weapons charges in Ocean County

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A man remains in custody in Ocean County after being charged with aggravated assault and multiple weapons offenses, according to jail records.

Joel Herrera-Cortes, 30, was booked into the Ocean County Jail on January 26 and is being held without bail. He is charged with second-degree aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Court records list no projected release date for Herrera-Cortes, and he has an active detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the alleged incident leading to his arrest. The case remains open.
