TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey lawmakers are set to consider a new round of gun control legislation, reigniting a long-standing debate in a state already known for its strict firearm laws.

The Assembly Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, February 20, to review several proposed bills aimed at regulating firearm possession, manufacturing, and use. The measures include penalties for possessing digital firearm blueprints, restrictions on machine gun conversion devices, and additional requirements for firearm confiscation in domestic violence cases.

One proposal, A.4974, seeks to criminalize the sale and possession of machine gun conversion devices, which are already illegal under state and federal law. Another, A.4975, would make it a crime to possess digital instructions for 3D-printing firearms, even if no firearm is produced. A.4976 would establish reckless discharge as a crime, while A.1389 would mandate the surrender of ammunition and firearm components under domestic violence restraining orders, including in cases of unproven accusations.

The legislative push comes during a key election year in New Jersey, where recent races have been tighter than expected. With residents expressing frustration over rising property taxes and the cost of living, some lawmakers are questioning whether additional gun restrictions will resonate with voters.
