BALTIMORE, Md. — A Washington, D.C. man turned a routine stop for gas and candy into a $100,000 Maryland Lottery win, thanks to a set of numbers inspired by a passing license plate.

The lucky player purchased two identical $1 straight bet Pick 5 tickets at the Kentland Shell on Landover Road in Hyattsville for the October 3 drawing. His chosen numbers—78377—matched the winning combination, earning him two $50,000 prizes.

“I was looking at the website thinking those numbers looked familiar,” the winner said. After confirming his Pick 5 Box tickets were winners, he knew his straight bet tickets had also hit the jackpot.

The winner waited to claim his prize until he explored investment options. He is considering using part of his winnings to start a small business.

The Kentland Shell will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the two winning tickets.
