Governor Moore, Democrats “Completely Absurd” to Blame Trump for State’s Dire Finances

Maryland Governor Wes Moore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) condemned Governor Wes Moore and Maryland Democrats for attempting to link President Donald Trump to the state’s worsening financial outlook and new tax proposals.

In a statement, Harris called the claim “absolutely absurd,” arguing that Maryland’s projected $3 billion deficit was the result of reckless spending and aggressive taxation by the Democrat-controlled General Assembly. “This is classic Democrat misdirection—create a mess, then point fingers at anyone but themselves,” Harris said.

The deficit projection was first reported in November 2024 by nonpartisan analysts, months before Trump’s inauguration in January. Harris questioned how Trump could be responsible for what he called “fiscal mismanagement” in Annapolis.

The debate comes as Maryland leaders consider new taxes and budget adjustments to address the shortfall, while Republicans push back against what they see as misplaced blame.
