HOUSTON, TX — A 61-year-old grandfather was fatally shot while picking up food for his grandchildren at a McDonald’s in Harris County, caught in the crossfire of an unrelated dispute between two groups, officials said.

Jorge Arbaiza was inside the restaurant on March 16 when gunfire erupted. His wife, Teresa Arbaiza, who was waiting in the car with their grandchildren, witnessed the chaos as armed individuals began shooting and patrons fled the building.

Authorities said Arbaiza was struck by multiple bullets. Teresa told KHOU that she called her husband as the violence unfolded. In the call, Arbaiza reportedly told her, “I’m dying. I’m going to die.” She said he had been shot five times.

Unable to leave the children alone, Teresa remained in the car as emergency crews responded. Law enforcement said Arbaiza’s final moments were spent making the sign of the cross and praying.

Investigators confirmed that Arbaiza was not involved in the conflict. The suspects connected to the shooting have not yet been identified or apprehended, according to Harris County officials.

Arbaiza had entered the restaurant solely to buy Happy Meals for his grandchildren.
