HYATTSVILLE, MD — A carryout food run turned into a six-figure windfall for a Clarksburg man who picked up a $20 Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket and walked out $100,000 richer.

The Montgomery County resident had some time to spare while waiting for his meal when he stepped into Bill’s Wine and Liquor on Annapolis Road. Drawn in by the bold, icy blue design of the newly released Ice scratch-off game, he bought two tickets using $20 he had in his pocket.

He scratched the tickets while chatting with a friend. The first ticket came up short, but the second delivered a shock — a $100,000 top prize.

He admitted to scanning the ticket multiple times in disbelief before accepting that it was real. The winner, who has chosen to remain unnamed, said he’s shared the news with only a few close friends and intends to stay quiet about the win.

Though he briefly considered taking a vacation, he now plans to use the prize money to pay off bills and build savings.

Bill’s Wine and Liquor, where the winning ticket was purchased, will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize winner.
