Boil water notice issued for Brooksville apartments after main line repair

A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for residents of the 600 Darby Lane Apartments in Brooksville following an interruption in water service caused by repairs to a main water line.

According to the City of Brooksville’s Department of Utilities, service was interrupted for approximately two hours Tuesday morning after crews repaired a 2-inch main line. In response, city officials advised that all water used for drinking or cooking should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute.

“This ‘Precautionary Boil-Water Notice’ will remain in effect until satisfactory water samples demonstrate that the water is safe for drinking or cooking,” the city stated in the notice.

The boil water notice applies to apartment units numbered 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 at the 600 Darby Lane address. While the water is not currently considered safe for consumption, it may be used for bathing and cleaning purposes.

Officials estimate the advisory will remain in place for three to five days. Residents will be notified by handout when the system is cleared for regular use.

City officials monitoring water quality for safety clearance

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends a rolling boil of one minute as sufficient to disinfect water. Bottled water may be used as an alternative during this period.

Clearance for drinking water use will depend on bacteriological examination of samples collected after repairs. Only once the water passes testing will the notice be lifted.

“If you have questions, please contact the City of Brooksville, Department of Utilities, at 352-540-3860,” the notice advised.
