Three arrested in Southwood Square drug and gun bust following police chase

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Three individuals, including a juvenile, were arrested in Southwood Square on April 7 following a vehicle stop that turned into a police pursuit and led to the discovery of firearms and narcotics, according to the Syracuse Police Department.

SPD Narcotics and Organized Crime detectives were conducting surveillance when they observed suspicious activity involving a juvenile male and two adults, Zyaire Corey, 23, and Janiya Gill, 19. Officers initiated a vehicle stop, but the driver attempted to flee and struck an unmarked police vehicle during the attempt.

Patrol and K9 units responded to the scene and successfully detained all occupants without injury. A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded .38 Special revolver, 89.5 grams of marijuana, 33 folds of fentanyl, 8.6 grams of crack cocaine, a digital scale, and $730 in cash, police said.

The juvenile was charged with multiple firearm and narcotics-related offenses and was remanded to juvenile detention.

Corey was charged with narcotics violations and interfering with police. Gill, the alleged driver, faces charges including reckless driving, failure to stop for police, and interfering with officers.

All three suspects were taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into drug activity in the area.
