Joyride leads to trip to impound yard for New York teen

MEDFORD, N.Y. — A 19-year-old driver had his vehicle impounded by the Suffolk County Police Department after performing illegal burnouts on Fairmount Avenue, police said Saturday.

The department’s Street Takeover Task Force witnessed the driver executing the stunts and took immediate action, seizing the Ford Mustang involved.

In addition to the impoundment, the driver received two summonses. Authorities did not release the driver’s name.

“The message is simple, if you are taking part in a street race or performing vehicle stunts, like burnouts, the SCPD will impound your vehicle,” the department posted on social media.

The Street Takeover Task Force was created to target illegal street racing and reckless driving incidents across Suffolk County.

Street enforcement effort continues

The SCPD has increased enforcement in response to a rise in street racing and stunt driving incidents, often organized through social media and drawing crowds that block roads and intersections.

Officials said the department will continue to monitor known trouble spots and respond quickly to stunt driving or racing reports. Police encourage residents to report suspicious driving behavior to help reduce the risks associated with illegal takeovers.

The department said the impoundment is part of ongoing efforts to deter dangerous driving and hold violators accountable. No injuries or property damage were reported in this incident.

Police seized the Ford Mustang after the 19-year-old driver performed burnouts on a residential road.
