HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A retired landscaper from Sharpsburg is celebrating after scoring a $50,000 top prize from the Maryland Lottery’s $50,000 Cash scratch-off game.

The Washington County resident, who goes by “Shady Grady,” purchased the winning ticket at Hub City Liquors in Hagerstown after being drawn in by a banner celebrating a previous win at the store. That same banner inspired what turned into a life-changing visit.

“I would have gone right by the store,” the winner told Lottery officials. “But, that sign caught my attention.” After scratching off the ticket, he said his hands were shaking as he handed it to his wife for confirmation. Once she confirmed the win, the couple spent the evening celebrating with “joy, nerves, and lots of laughter.”

The ticket was claimed on May 15 at Maryland Lottery headquarters. The couple plans to save and invest the prize money.

This marks the 96th top-prize win in the $50,000 Cash game, which launched in December 2022 with 160 top prizes. Hub City Liquors, located at 1063 Maryland Avenue, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The Hagerstown store has a history of Lottery success, including two major wins in 2023 — a $2 million Cash is King ticket and a $100,000 Ultimate Cash prize.
