WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 52-year-old woman is facing over a year behind bars after being convicted Wednesday of felony-enhanced second-degree theft for stealing hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise from a Target store in Columbia Heights.

Meredith Wilson was found guilty after a jury trial, marking the first such trial for felony-enhanced theft in over a decade, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Court documents show that on June 27, 2024, Wilson spent a prolonged period inside the Target located in the DC USA Mall, placing numerous items into large bags before walking past the registers without paying. She was stopped by Target’s Asset Protection staff and detained until police arrived.

The stolen merchandise was valued at $805. Due to prior convictions for second-degree theft in 2017 and 2018, Wilson was eligible for enhanced felony charges under D.C. law.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 15, 2025.
