BECKER, Minn. — A 35-year-old Becker man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly driving drunk and leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in the death of his girlfriend, authorities said.
According to the Sherburne County District Court, Johnathan James Schafer was charged with one felony count of failing to stop at the scene of a traffic collision resulting in death and one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on May 15, 2025.
Court documents allege Schafer was involved in a domestic dispute while driving with his girlfriend, identified only by initials J.M.M. During the argument, the woman reportedly jumped out of Schafer’s moving truck. Schafer allegedly continued driving, leaving her fatally injured on the road without calling for emergency assistance.
The felony complaint states Schafer knew or had reason to know that the collision resulted in serious injury or death, yet he failed to stop or notify authorities as required under Minnesota law.
Suspect remains in custody as investigation continues
Schafer was taken into custody and remains detained following a court order issued on May 19. Authorities confirmed that he was intoxicated while operating the vehicle, leading to the additional misdemeanor charge under Minnesota Statute 169A.20.1(1), which carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
The investigation revealed Schafer did not contact 911 after the woman exited the vehicle. Law enforcement located the victim deceased at the scene.
The court found probable cause to proceed with the charges, and Schafer is expected to appear in court for further proceedings in the coming weeks. The case remains under active investigation.
