Smoke thief swipes $2K in cigs from Newark deli

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a burglary suspect who stole an estimated $2,000 worth of cigarettes during a break-in at a convenience store in Newark early Wednesday morning.

According to Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., the suspect was captured on surveillance video at approximately 1:16 a.m. on May 21 forcing entry into Krauszer’s Food Store & Deli, located in the 200 block of Market Street.

Video footage shows the suspect using a metal object to pry open the store’s door before entering and leaving briefly. The suspect then returned with a black garbage bag, walked behind the counter, and filled it with several boxes of cigarettes before fleeing the scene.

The individual was seen wearing a black and white sweater during the burglary. No arrests have been made, and police are working to identify the suspect.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-695-8477. Tips can also be submitted online at npd.newarkpublicsafety.org.
