ELIZABETH, N.J. — Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday joined the New Jersey State Police to mark the opening of a new Port Security Section detachment in Elizabeth, expanding the state’s efforts to secure one of the busiest maritime hubs on the East Coast.
The facility, located within the Port of New Jersey, is dedicated to addressing threats including drug trafficking, organized crime, and personnel vetting. Officials said the new detachment will enhance the state’s capacity to monitor and respond to security risks at the major shipping terminal.
The Port of New Jersey is among the largest ports in the country by volume and a key node in the national supply chain. The detachment will allow for an increased trooper presence in and around the port facilities.
“From intercepting illegal drugs to exposing organized crime and vetting those who work along our docks, our troopers stand watch—protecting the Port of New Jersey and ensuring it remains safe, strong, and secure,” the New Jersey State Police said in a public statement.
The announcement follows a series of investments in port infrastructure and security coordination between state and federal agencies.
New facility will focus on maritime crime and workforce vetting
The new Port Security Section will operate in coordination with Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard, and other federal partners. Its mission includes interdicting narcotics, investigating cargo theft, and monitoring criminal activity linked to organized syndicates operating through the docks.
Officials emphasized the importance of workforce screening at the port, where thousands of individuals handle sensitive cargo daily. The new detachment is expected to enhance enforcement of port credentialing programs and background checks.
The initiative reflects a broader trend of tightening security at critical infrastructure sites in response to evolving threats. New Jersey authorities cited recent seizures and investigative leads that originated from intelligence gathered at port facilities.
State police say the new detachment was formed with specialized troopers trained in maritime operations and logistical enforcement, with a focus on rapid deployment capabilities.
