LANGLEY, Va. — A Virginia woman who was shot by law enforcement after driving the wrong way toward CIA headquarters early Thursday morning had an “odor of alcohol” and told hospital staff she had been drinking at a nearby bar, according to newly released court documents.
Monia Spadaro was behind the wheel of a gray Toyota Corolla around 3:38 a.m. on May 22 when she entered CIA property in the outbound traffic lane, prompting a marked CIA Police vehicle to initiate a traffic stop with lights and sirens. The affidavit, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, states that Spadaro ignored signals to stop and instead executed reckless maneuvers as she approached the agency’s main security gate.
According to the affidavit, Spadaro accelerated toward the gate despite visible and audible attempts by multiple CIA officers to halt her vehicle. A CIA officer positioned on foot near the gate fired his weapon as the vehicle continued at a high speed, striking Spadaro. The car then collided with a security barrier.
CIA Police took Spadaro into custody at the scene and identified her using vehicle registration found inside the car. She was the sole occupant and was transported to Fairfax INOVA Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound and related injuries.
Suspect admitted to drinking at Vienna bar
While receiving medical attention, Spadaro reportedly told hospital staff she had been drinking earlier at Patsy’s, a bar and restaurant in Vienna, Virginia. A CIA officer who accompanied her in the ambulance noted that her eyes appeared glossy and bloodshot and that she emitted an odor of alcohol.
Spadaro has been charged with driving under the influence on a federal installation and with willfully disregarding law enforcement signals in a manner that endangered others, in violation of federal law and assimilated Virginia state code.
She remains under investigation by federal authorities and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
