SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — In response to a violent and chaotic Memorial Day weekend that left three people stabbed and more than 70 arrested, Seaside Heights officials are weighing new restrictions aimed at curbing unruly behavior on the boardwalk ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday.
During a borough council meeting this week, Mayor Anthony Vaz and council members discussed several proposals, including an earlier closure time for the boardwalk.
One option under consideration would mandate a 10 p.m. shutdown for this July 4. If enacted, similar restrictions could be applied next Memorial Day weekend and future holidays.
Officials also raised the possibility of banning backpacks on the boardwalk, citing public safety concerns. Exceptions would be made for diaper bags, medical equipment, and other essential items.
The goal is to prevent kids from carrying concealed weapons or other illegal items.
Short-term rental fines and regulations under review
Another topic discussed involved stricter enforcement of short-term rental rules, including potential amendments to the mandatory minimum fines for violations. Officials said current measures may not be strong enough to deter large, unruly gatherings that have become more common during summer weekends.
The proposed ordinances could come up for formal adoption at the council’s next meeting on June 18, pending review and approval.
