Pittsburgh Police K9 Miky dies from medical emergency

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police unexpectedly lost a member of the K9 Unit on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 due to a medical emergency. K9 Miky was a six-year-old Belgian Malinois.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police announced the unexpected death of K9 Miky, a six-year-old Belgian Malinois, following a medical emergency on Wednesday.

K9 Miky had served with the department since graduating from the Pittsburgh Police K9 School on January 24, 2020, alongside his handler, Officer Matt Schwartzmiller. Miky was trained as both a patrol and narcotics dog.

Miky was a well-regarded member of the K9 Unit, known and appreciated by fellow handlers. The department said he will be deeply missed by Officer Schwartzmiller, his wife and children, and the entire Pittsburgh Police Bureau family.

The cause of the medical emergency was not specified in the department’s announcement.

K9 Miky’s service leaves a lasting mark on the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and his handler’s family.
