SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — An 18-year-old student was detained Friday afternoon after a loaded handgun was discovered in her bag during a routine security screening at Schenectady High School, police said.

At approximately 12:01 p.m., school staff alerted Community Engagement Officers stationed at the school after a metal detector flagged a potential weapon inside a student’s backpack at the building’s entry.

Officers responded and confiscated what appeared to be a loaded firearm. The student was immediately detained and taken to Schenectady Police Department headquarters, where she is currently speaking with detectives.

As a precaution, the school was briefly placed on hold during the incident. The hold has since been lifted, and normal operations have resumed.

Investigation ongoing with district cooperation

Police said they are working closely with the Schenectady City School District as the investigation continues. The identity of the student has not been released, and no injuries were reported.

Authorities stated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
