What’s that smell in Dover? Forest fires pushing smoke through region

DOVER, Del. — The Dover Police Department has issued a community alert regarding the smell of smoke across the city, attributing it to wildfires burning in the region.

In a statement posted Friday, officials said the smoke is affecting local air quality and urged residents not to call 911 unless they see visible flames or face an immediate emergency.

“Please do not call 911 to report the odor unless you see visible fire or an immediate emergency,” the department stated.

The department advised residents sensitive to air quality issues to limit outdoor activity as a precaution.
