Scratch-off routine pays off big for Maryland retiree

Pile of money.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A Washington County man who never spends more than $20 on lottery tickets walked away with a $100,000 win last week after sticking to his personal rule — always buy two of the same ticket.

The retired county employee purchased two $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-offs at Wooden Keg Liquors on Jefferson Boulevard in Hagerstown. The $50 tickets were a splurge, but one he’d been planning for days.

“I’d been thinking about it for a couple of days, so I was ready,” he said while claiming the prize on Monday. The first ticket earned back his $50. The second, scratched at home, kept revealing $5,000 prizes. “There were so many of them. They just kept adding up,” he said. The total came to $100,000.

He called the experience emotional and said the win answered any questions about his retirement finances — with enough left over to share.

Big wins still available in Fortune game

The $5,000,000 Fortune ticket, which launched in February, still has all three $5 million top prizes unclaimed. In addition, six $100,000 second-tier and eight $50,000 third-tier prizes remain in circulation.
