WEST CHESTER, Pa. — A Chester County jury has found Quinzell Mickey guilty of first-degree murder and a firearms offense in the 2023 shooting death of 33-year-old William Stafford, officials announced Friday.

The verdict follows a week-long trial in which prosecutors presented evidence that Mickey fatally shot Stafford on April 15, 2023, before fleeing the scene. Authorities said Mickey remained at large for several months before he was taken into custody.

“The Defendant will be sentenced at a later date,” the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. Under Pennsylvania law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence.

“This was a senseless and brutal murder,” District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said. “Our condolences go to the family and friends of the victim.”

Investigation led by county detectives

The investigation was led by Chester County Detectives with support from the East Vincent Township Police Department and the Philadelphia Police Department. Mickey’s arrest followed a months-long manhunt after he evaded immediate capture following the shooting.

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Yurick and Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Kaelin prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth.

No sentencing date has been announced. Mickey remains in custody pending formal sentencing procedures.
