WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a strongly worded newsletter released over the Fourth of July weekend, U.S. Senator Andy Kim condemned the recently passed House Republican-backed budget measure, which he refers to as the “Big Disastrous Bill,” warning that it will inflict widespread harm on working families across New Jersey.
Senator Kim criticized New Jersey Representatives Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew, and Chris Smith for supporting the bill. He accused them of breaking campaign promises and backing provisions that include extending the SALT cap, slashing Medicaid and SNAP benefits, and cutting programs for seniors and low-income residents.
“The passage of Trump’s Big Disastrous Bill is a disappointing display of cowardice and a betrayal of the American people,” Kim said.
The newsletter features firsthand accounts from local advocates and residents who would be affected by the cuts, including:
- Peter Rosario, President of La Casa de Don Pedro in Essex County, said cuts to the LIHEAP program would end critical energy assistance for over 10,000 households.
- Jenna Vega, a social services manager in Paterson, described how families already struggling post-COVID may lose food and health benefits without warning.
- Rabiyatu, a Pell Grant recipient and Rutgers-Camden student, called the financial aid a lifeline that enables her to pursue higher education and support her immigrant family.
Senator Kim also detailed his recent actions in the Senate, including an amendment to support home health care workers that was voted down, and public remarks urging Republican lawmakers to show courage in opposing the bill.
The newsletter concludes with a message of continued advocacy: “Despite this vote, we are not giving up. The courage of our collective voices is a force against the cowardice of Republicans’ votes for billionaires.”
