Immigrant Held on ICE Detainer for Domestic Assault in Ocean County Jail

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A 27-year-old man is being held without bail in Ocean County after authorities charged him with aggravated assault involving strangulation, false imprisonment, and attempting to cause bodily injury, according to jail records.

Hamlet Encarnacion-Barreiro was booked Tuesday at the Ocean County Correctional Facility following his arrest stemming from a domestic violence incident, including aggravated assault for allegedly strangling a victim, false imprisonment, and attempted bodily injury.

According to court documents, Encarnacion-Barreiro was charged under New Jersey statutes 2C:12-1A(1) for attempted bodily injury, 2C:13-3 for false imprisonment, and 2C:12-1B(13) for aggravated assault by strangulation of a domestic violence victim. The charges range from third- to fourth-degree offenses.

His bond was set at zero dollars, and he is being held on a no-bail status. The case remains open as of Sunday. No projected release date has been provided by authorities.

A detainer was also issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
