Runaway bus in Lakewood’s Westgate neighborhood stopped by quick-thinking bystander

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided Friday in the Westgate neighborhood when a parked MonseyTrail bus began rolling uncontrolled down the street after reportedly losing its brakes.

According to witnesses, the bus traveled more than a block, posing a serious risk to pedestrians in the area. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, with multiple people nearby as the vehicle began moving on its own.

Acting quickly, one individual managed to jump into the moving bus and activate the emergency brake, bringing it to a stop.

The bus was operated by Monsey Trails, a New York based bus company that officers bus routes between Lakewood and Brooklyn, New York daily.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and the bus was secured without further damage.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding the cause of the brake failure.
