Frederick expands traffic camera program with new red light and speed enforcement

FREDERICK, Md. — The Frederick Police Department announced Monday an expansion of its automated traffic enforcement program, launching a warning period for several new red-light and speed camera locations across the city.

Beginning Aug. 3, citations will be issued to violators at the new sites, which are aimed at reducing traffic crashes and enhancing roadway safety, according to police.

New camera placements include red-light enforcement at Thomas Johnson Drive and Opossumtown Pike, and speed enforcement at the 1700 block of Opossumtown Pike, the 500 block of West Patrick Street, and Schifferstadt Boulevard at East 16th Street.

Pending installations on the 7900 block of Opossumtown Pike—both northbound and southbound—are expected to be completed within five weeks once utility work by Potomac Edison is finished.

All violations are documented with photo and video evidence and reviewed by a Frederick Police officer before citations are issued. The fines are $40 for speed violations and $75 for red-light violations. Additional fees may apply for late payments.

The program is administered in partnership with Verra Mobility, a traffic safety technology provider.
