SEVERN, MD — A Severn retiree turned a routine grocery store visit into a $30,000 payday after purchasing a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket on impulse.
The man, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed the top prize on the Diamond Bingo 6th Edition $3 ticket after buying it at the Giant Food store located at 7940 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie. According to lottery officials, he is the first to win the top prize on the newly released ticket.
“It just caught my eye as I was walking out,” the Anne Arundel County resident said during his visit to Maryland Lottery headquarters on Wednesday.
Initially, the winner believed he had won $60 after scratching the ticket at home. It wasn’t until he scanned the ticket at a lottery retailer the following day that he learned he had actually hit the $30,000 jackpot.
“When I heard the amount, I was confused,” he said. “I consider it luck, but I definitely wasn’t expecting that news!”
The man said he does not frequently play lottery games but occasionally buys tickets when something stands out. He plans to use the winnings to help make retirement more comfortable.
“I’m going to save it to make my retirement easier,” he said.
Maryland Lottery officials said the prize was the first top-tier win for the 6th Edition of the Diamond Bingo scratch-off, which launched recently.
