NEWARK, N.J. — Drivers across New Jersey encountered multiple slowdowns and lane closures Thursday morning as rush hour traffic built up at major crossings and along key routes.
The George Washington Bridge saw significant congestion on both levels. Eastbound traffic on the upper level faced 30-minute delays from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, while the lower level clocked in at 25 minutes, with all lanes open.
At the Lincoln Tunnel, delays continued eastbound through both the center and south tunnels at the New Jersey toll plaza in Weehawken, with travel times at 20 minutes from NJ Turnpike Exit 16E to New York.
The Garden State Parkway experienced two notable slowdowns:
- A 4-mile delay northbound from Exit 149 (CR 506, Bloomfield) to Exit 153A (NJ 3, Clifton).
- A 2-mile delay northbound between Exit 143C (NJ 124, Irvington) and Exit 145 (I-280, East Orange).
Disabled vehicles added to the morning complications:
- A disabled vehicle on I-280 westbound at Exit 15 (NJ 21, Newark) closed one of two lanes.
- A disabled tractor trailer blocked the right lane on the George Washington Bridge upper level eastbound ramp to West 178th Street.
Additional delays included:
- I-287 westbound local lanes near Exit 21 (I-78, Bedminster Twp).
- NJ 17 northbound from Summit Ave (Hackensack) to I-80 (Maywood).
- New Jersey Turnpike delays in both directions:
- Eastern Spur northbound from Interchange 15E (US 1&9) to 15W (I-280, Kearny) – 2-mile backup.
- Western Spur northbound from Southern Mixing Bowl to 15W – 2-mile delay.
- I-95 express lanes northbound from Exit 69 (Teaneck) to GW Bridge Lower Level – 3-mile delay.
Roving road repairs are also in effect:
- US 206 southbound from Atsion Lake to CR 648 in Shamong Twp – right lane closed.
- US 130 both directions between CR 618 (Carneys Point Twp) and I-295 (Logan Twp) – all lanes closed and detoured.
JFK Airport’s Terminal 4 Blue Parking lot in New York reached 99% capacity as of 8:20 a.m.
Major bridges, parkways, and tunnels remain heavily congested as Thursday morning’s commute continues across the region.
