Smash-and-grab suspect seen fleeing Newark streets

NEWARK, N.J. — Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man connected to two overnight vehicle break-ins that occurred between July 6 and July 7 in the city’s South Ward.

Two cars were targeted—one on West Runyon Street and the other on Ridgewood Avenue—where rear passenger windows were shattered and personal items were taken, including a canvas bag and a non-working cell phone.

Surveillance footage captured a bald white male wearing a black shirt, blue shorts, grey sneakers, and carrying a backpack. The suspect was seen approaching and leaving the areas where the vehicles were ransacked.

The incident was reported after the victims discovered the thefts early Monday morning and contacted officers.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity is urged to call the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All tips are confidential and may be eligible for a reward.
