New Jersey State Troopers rescue dog from tidal current in Elizabeth marina

Two New Jersey State Troopers pulled a distressed dog from the waters of the Arthur Kill on Sunday morning after spotting the animal struggling against a strong current near the Elizabeth Marina.

Around 6:30 a.m., Trooper I Michael Buchell and Trooper I Shane McClafferty from the Carteret Station responded to a report of a dog in distress in the water off Elizabeth, Union County. While patrolling the area, they noticed unusual movement and discovered a small dog, believed to be about one year old, being carried by the tide.

Tpr. McClafferty maneuvered the State Police vessel while Tpr. Buchell used a life ring and rescue blanket to pull the dog aboard. The animal was showing signs of fatigue and early hypothermia, officials said, prompting the troopers to dry and warm him immediately.

The dog, nicknamed Oscar the Grouch, was transported to the Carteret Station and later evaluated. He was found to be in good health.

Tpr. Buchell is currently caring for Oscar until his owner can be identified.
