Wilmington man arrested on gun charge after traffic stop on I-95

A Wilmington man was arrested Sunday after Delaware State Police found a loaded firearm during a traffic stop on I-95 northbound in Newark.

Lenford Kirlew, 24, was taken into custody around 3:32 p.m. after a trooper observed his white Honda Accord bypassing traffic on the right shoulder of Route 1 northbound and continuing onto I-95 while still on the shoulder. The vehicle had multiple equipment violations, police said.

During the stop, Kirlew gave inconsistent statements and repeatedly attempted to re-enter his vehicle despite being instructed to stay outside. According to police, he was ultimately detained after he was seen getting back into the car and reaching toward the passenger seat.

After taking Kirlew into custody, troopers discovered a loaded firearm on the passenger seat that had been concealed during their initial approach.

Kirlew was arrested on a felony gun charge. Details on additional charges were not immediately released.
