TRENTON — A section of Route 18 southbound in East Brunswick will be closed and detoured nightly from Tuesday through Friday as part of an ongoing pavement and drainage improvement project, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced.
Starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, through 5 a.m. the following morning, and continuing nightly through Friday, July 18, Route 18 southbound will be closed between Arthur Street and Racetrack Road. The closure is necessary to install new drainage systems and remove an old gas main. In case of inclement weather, the work will be rescheduled for the following night.
A signed detour will direct motorists to:
- Turn right onto Arthur Street
- Turn left onto Summerhill Road (CR 613) southbound
- Turn left onto Racetrack Road to rejoin Route 18
The work is part of the $86.1 million federally funded Route 18, East Brunswick, Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation project. The project covers approximately 4.5 miles and includes milling and paving, drainage upgrades, utility relocation, ADA-compliant curb ramp installation, new sidewalks, guiderail improvements, and intersection upgrades.
The project is expected to continue through late 2027. Variable message signs will alert drivers to changing traffic patterns. All scheduling remains subject to weather conditions and operational factors.
