DC man gets 37 months in prison for handgun possession after marijuana stop

WASHINGTON — A D.C. man was sentenced Monday to over three years in federal prison after officers found him carrying a loaded Glock handgun during a stop for public marijuana use, federal prosecutors said.

Dominique Davis, 26, pleaded guilty in March to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden sentenced him to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

On September 26, 2024, Metropolitan Police officers were patrolling the 4300 block of 4th Street SE when they detected the smell of burning marijuana, according to court documents. Officers approached a group of four men and saw Davis holding a lit marijuana cigarette.

After Davis extinguished the cigarette and provided identification, officers discovered he had an outstanding warrant in Prince George’s County, Maryland, for first-degree assault.

A search of Davis revealed a Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun loaded with 17 rounds — one in the chamber and 16 in a large-capacity magazine.

Davis, who has a prior felony conviction, is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.
