WASHINGTON, DC — A barricade situation Tuesday afternoon in Northwest snarled traffic and prompted police negotiators to respond, as officers worked to de-escalate a standoff in the 400 block of New York Avenue NW.

Just after 2 p.m., traffic officials reported multiple road closures tied to the ongoing incident. Among the affected routes were the northbound 3rd Street Tunnel from I-695/South Capitol Street, northbound I-395 at the 3rd Street Tunnel ramp, New York Avenue from New Jersey Avenue to 5th Street in Northwest and 4th Street from Massachusetts Avenue to M Street in Northwest D.C.

Police urged residents and commuters to avoid the area. MPD crisis negotiators were on site attempting to bring the barricade to a peaceful conclusion. Authorities have not yet released details about the individual involved or the circumstances that triggered the standoff.

As of Tuesday evening, roads remained blocked as the situation continued to unfold.
