GREENSBURG, Pa. — A Westmoreland County grand jury has brought homicide and related charges against a man accused of fatally shooting 31-year-old James Michael Hayes in New Kensington in 2022.

District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli announced Wednesday that Larry Nix, 41, of West Brownsville, is charged with criminal homicide, attempted homicide, recklessly endangering another person, and possession of a firearm prohibited.

Prosecutors allege Nix opened fire in the parking lot of the Kensington Arms apartment building on 11th Street on Dec. 9, 2022, killing Hayes. A judge upheld the charges last month following a preliminary hearing.

Nix waived his formal arraignment scheduled for Wednesday before Common Pleas Judge Scott Mears and is expected back in court in August for a pre-trial conference.

The case is the first to result from a Westmoreland County investigating grand jury convened in February 2024 — the first in more than 30 years.
