Off-duty Philly cop brawls with man on street and ends up hospitalized

PHILADELPHIA — An off-duty Philadelphia Police officer was hospitalized Tuesday after a violent confrontation with a man in South Philadelphia that ended with both men injured and one in custody, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 4:28 p.m. in the area of the 1700 block of South 32nd Street. Police said the officer was involved in a physical altercation with an adult male when both sustained injuries during the struggle.

Responding officers transported the injured officer to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

The other man involved was taken into custody at the scene and transported to Methodist Hospital. His current condition was not immediately released.

The identity of the officer and the man were not made public. Police have not yet disclosed what led to the altercation.

South Detectives are leading the ongoing investigation.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation,” police said in a statement Tuesday evening.
