A Columbia man who rarely plays the lottery won $50,000 on a Bonus Match 5 ticket, crediting his mother for convincing him to try his luck.

The Howard County resident bought a $6 quick-pick ticket with combinations on July 23 at the Timonium Exxon on York Road while running errands. He discovered the next day that his numbers matched the winning draw and confirmed the $50,000 prize with his mother.

The winner claimed his prize July 31 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. He said he plans to use the money to pay off medical bills, make a down payment on a house, and take his mother out to celebrate.

The Exxon station that sold the ticket will receive a $500 bonus.
