Road worker killed by drunk driver in Toms River

A 50-year-old road construction worker was fatally struck early Thursday morning in Toms River by a pickup truck driven by a man now charged with driving while intoxicated, officials said.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. near Lakewood Road and Raymond Avenue. Responding officers found the victim lying in the roadway with severe injuries. He was taken to Community Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.

Investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Toms River Police determined the worker had been on-site for a roadway construction company when he was hit by a northbound white 2015 Chevrolet pickup.

The driver, Douglas Smith, 51, of Toms River, was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving. Blood was drawn at Community Medical Center, and prosecutors say further criminal charges are possible pending toxicology results.
