New York thief who robbed 10 year old boy of babysitting money while sitting on front porch is heading to prison

Newburgh, NY – A Newburgh man has been convicted on all charges stemming from a robbery in which he forcibly took money from a 10-year-old boy in broad daylight, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced Thursday.

Jamar Murry-El, 31, was found guilty by a jury of Robbery in the Third Degree, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He faces a sentence of 3.5 to 7 years in state prison when he appears for sentencing on October 22. Murry-El was remanded to Orange County Jail without bail following the verdict.

The charges arise from an incident on October 18, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., when the child was walking to a babysitter’s home in the City of Newburgh carrying $200 in cash given by his parents. While on the porch of the residence, the defendant asked the child for $10. When the child refused and said the money was for the babysitter, Murry-El grabbed the entire amount from the child and fled the scene.

Police quickly responded and located Murry-El nearby. He was identified by the victim and arrested.

District Attorney Hoovler credited the child’s testimony as instrumental in securing the conviction and thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department for their swift response and investigation.
