Brownsville shooter who fired five shots at man in broad daylight sentenced to 10 years

BROOKLYN, NY — A 25-year-old man who gunned down another man in broad daylight on a busy Brooklyn street after a heated deli argument has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, following a jury conviction for attempted murder.

Orando Matthan, of Brownsville, tracked down the 25-year-old victim less than an hour after a confrontation at a Lenox Road deli, chasing him into a store and firing five close-range shots that nearly killed him, according to prosecutors. The victim survived after emergency surgery.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Margaret Martin handed down the sentence Tuesday after Matthan was convicted in June of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Two other men were also charged in connection to the case. Co-defendant Jeovanie Nelson pleaded guilty to gun possession and was sentenced in May to five years behind bars. A third man, Alex Davis, admitted to hindering prosecution and is awaiting sentencing.

According to trial testimony, the shooting stemmed from a June 3, 2023, dispute inside a deli at 1167 Lenox Road. Matthan shoved the victim during the altercation, then left the store with Nelson. The pair returned to Matthan’s home, where he retrieved a gun, showed it to Nelson, and concealed it in his hoodie before they walked back to the deli.

By the time they returned, the victim had left. Matthan eventually located him standing outside a store at 332 East 98th Street. He opened fire around 1:46 p.m., chasing the victim into the store and shooting him point-blank from the doorway.

The victim was struck in the hip, forearm, pinky, thigh, and head. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital for lifesaving treatment.

Matthan and Nelson fled the scene, stripping off their clothes and discarding the weapon in a trash can as they ran to a co-defendant’s Saratoga Avenue apartment. According to prosecutors, Nelson called Davis and said: “I just got a body.” Davis picked up the pair and helped them flee.

All three were arrested on July 25 after a police investigation linked them to the shooting.
